Meet Athena: The Goddess of Wisdom
For those who are new to Greek mythology, Athena, also known as Minerva in Roman mythology, is the goddess of wisdom. She is often depicted as a perpetual virgin and is symbolized by the owl. This powerful and wise goddess is the star of our coloring book. Each coloring book page displays Athena in myriad ways, ranging from serious to whimsical interpretations. We've applied our creative license, delivering unique depictions of the goddess to inspire your imagination. To deepen the learning experience, we've also included a "Further Reading Guide" with links to mythology-related books and websites where you can discover more about Athena and her fascinating stories.
Use the Coloring Book in the Classroom
This Athena-inspired coloring book is an excellent resource to supplement a mythology unit for middle or high school students. Each student could be assigned a different 'Athena' and invited to develop their creative writing skills by crafting a backstory, detailing the goddess's character traits, or elaborating on a specific myth.
And of course, the book can also serve its traditional purpose: providing hours of coloring fun!

Street Photography: 74th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens (Plus Some Creative Writing)
What was supposed to be a walk to increase my daily steps turned into a journey. People pop out. Restaurants offer outside seating. The night is crisp. Saturn and Jupiter are still visible in the sky — on the way to convergence. I wanted to get more faces in my photographs. But the moments passed by too quickly. I saw a masked guy in a cab. He was balefully looking out a window. The Q49 bus runs along 74th Street. Wear your mask.
Today in class an adolescent pupil couldn’t answer a question — so she said to me, “This question makes me feel unsafe.” I was taken aback by her statement. It’s the Covid. I imagined her shrieking out of class. By an unsafe question. I’m teaching a course on mythology. And one characteristic of myth is the unknown. So I get it, girl. Stuff gets real. From chaos to calm. From the womb to the tomb.

Poem for a Phlebotomist's Office (Or, a Public Service Announcement for Donating Blood)
Read this poem when you get your blood taken. |
blood being drawn,
dahlin' - no cry!
So, no sweat, boo -
What else you gonna do?
Sit back, relax, let
the trained phlebotomist do
her act! - 1, 2, 3
then you're done, hon! YAY!
At least it ain't no vaccine!
So get your snack on later and be serene
Wasn't it a "walk in the park?"!

Poem: Against the Bed Board
Against the Bed Board
Against the bed board, it is painful;
Eyes water, the video screen fuzzes.
Fixated on a controller,
It erases the pain—
I am in the zone.
I am bored; I really don’t like video games,
But I play them anyway,
Fixedly,
Like a hurt that is better frozen than healed,
A steak better wrapped in the freezer than brought into the sunlight.
A steady gaze that rather forgets than remembers,
Rather lies arched in piqued degrees of irritation.
